Why this DNC is Hiding their 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

This decision from the Democratic National Committee to block the public viewing of its own post-election analysis concerning the 2024 election seems stunning but to be expected. Opposed to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus often functions closer to a communications shop rather than a political organization committed to cultivating local power capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Climate of Conformity

Unwilling to challenge the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has stayed within the Biden-Harris shadow throughout this past year. Making public an official autopsy would have indicated that the leadership truly desire to foster honest conversation about the strategic failures that enabled the former president to become president again. Instead, the committee is acting as if there is little to understand from the stunning loss of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from our fundamental goal," a rationale that has been offered for withholding the document.

Major Failures an Autopsy Could Have Explored

An autopsy report worth its salt would not dodge certain uncomfortable matters. These include:

  • Electoral Disengagement: Losing among millions of voters who voted for the Democratic ticket during the previous election was decisive in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
  • A Decision to Run: The unwavering choice by a party leader to seek re-election, coupled with a very late withdrawal, is seen by some as denying the party's base of a competitive nomination process.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: During a time of rising costs, the campaign is criticized for ceding to powerful financial backers while failing to challenge the impact of big business.
  • A Foreign Policy Effect: The failure to adjust an approach on a major international conflict is cited as alienating significant blocs, notably among young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Support: Polling data indicates a major decrease of votes for the candidate among young voters.

A History Avoiding Accountability

This refusal aligns with a recurring tendency of sidestepping hard truths. It echoes a situation in which the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Washington supported an incumbent's determination to seeking another term right up until a poor televised debate forced an exit.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers of the electorate were continually telling researchers that they opposed the incumbent to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Questions

An honest autopsy would also examine matters about where money went, such as how much money flowed to insider consultants as well as ad buyers over the course of an electoral effort which expended an enormous amount over a few months.

A Larger Implication

At its core, the blockage surrounding this report is symptomatic of an allegiance to the established hierarchy that oversaw an unsuccessful national race. The message for the party's base – including countless dedicated activists – is that they do not have a right to know what the insiders say they discovered based on hundreds of interviews based on feedback from all states.

An organization unable to honestly assess where it went wrong finds it difficult to break free from the pattern that ended up being so advantageous to their opponents.
