Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
