Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
