EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
